Silver banded fountain pen (detail)

Each fountain pen or piece of writing equipment forms part of the collective history of its period and has a history unique to that particular item. In the 1930’s a silver banded fountain pen (right) was purchased by estate workers, with no doubt hard earned wages, and inscribed to present as a silver wedding gift to the land owner. It was reported recently that, in the days before the National Health Service, when health care had to be paid for, a man pawned his fountain pen to raise funds to enable his wife to be released from hospital. A recently sold writing cabinet was originally a presentation piece to recognise 40 years of loyal service in a period when jobs were for “life”. Just three examples which only scratch the surface of the lifetime of memories held within each item. A treasure trove of history that no new fountain pen could convey.

Below, and on following pages, are all the pens in our Sold Archive, displayed in a random order. This exceptional and elegant vintage fountain pen was made by Waterman around 1923. The base of the pen is made of hard rubber as was common at the time but the covering is sterling silver engraved with a pattern Waterman termed “Hand Engraved Vine”. The engraving is also on the cap clip which has the Waterman “Ideal” logo. Around the smooth ring of the cap are the words “Waterman’s Sterling”. Around the smooth ring at the top of the barrel are the words “Sterling Made in U.S.A.” The barrel lever also picks up the engraving and has the “Ideal” logo. There is a clear lozenge on the barrel which can be used for personalisation - however be aware that if you do so this will affect the value. At end of the barrel overlay you will see the hard rubber base and around the base are the words “Waterman’s Reg. U.S. Pat Off. Made in U.S.A. ” The bottom of the barrel has the model number “452½”. The nib is a Waterman which states “Waterman’s Ideal Reg.U.S. Pat. Off” and has a fine to medium point. This delightful vintage pen is ingood condition with very minor age wear. It is a slim pen and measures 13.6cm with cap on and 16.7cm with cap on barrel end. It will serve willingly as an everyday writer but it will also provide weight to a vintage fountain pen collection.

This Merlin No.33 vintage pen was made in Germany around 1950. It is a very serviceable economy line button filling pen. The camera has not quite caught the deepness of the pink which is really rather striking. Whilst it is a vintage pen it has not previously seen much use and therefore the fine-medium Merlin 14ct gold nib will smooth to suit your hand. Condition is good with only minor age wear to the trim. It measures 11.8cm with cap on and 14cm with cap on barrel end. A good economy vintage pen for everyday use. Condition: Good
Colour: Sterling Silver Overlay
c1929

This delightful Waterman vintage fountain pen has a sterling silver overlay in a design Waterman termed “Basket Weave”. The silver is overlaid on hard rubber, the basic material used for a large number of fountain pens at the time.  It was made in America around 1929 and in common with the fashion of the period it has a ring on the top of the cap rather than a clip. It was designed to have a ribbon or chain through the cap ring which enabled ladies to wear it around the neck or gentlemen to hang it from a watch chain. It has the Waterman branding on the lip of the cap, the Waterman "Ideal" lozenge on the lever and the appropriate model numbering of 452½ v on the bottom of the barrel. Around the barrel are the words “Sterling – Made in USA”. The fine to medium nib Waterman nib states “Waterman Reg. US Pat. Off. 2”. It is a small, slim, elegant pen measuring 9cm with cap on and 12.2cm with cap on barrel end. As you will see from the photograph the lozenge is clear and the condition is good with only minor age wear. A lovely vintage Waterman pen to either add to a collection or use as an everyday writer. Fine - but smooth nib, Lever fill system.
Condition: Good
Colour: Moss Agate
c1930

Sold

This vintage pen, which Waterman called the Lady Patricia, was created in 1930 for the female hand, following the successful sales of the Waterman Patrician range – a much larger fountain pen aimed primarily at the male market. The Stationery Trades’ Journal of the time (November 1930) praised its “slender careful lines and smart modish colour” It was marketed as having a “smart, modern, feminine cap clasp – holding the pen securely in place, even in the most crowded handbag.” The first Lady Patricia was presented to Miss Amy Johnson (1903-1941) the English female aviator who carried a Waterman fountain pen during her daring solo flight from England to Australia. It was marketed in a range of patterns – this one is called Moss Agate. The cap top, clip, single decorated cap band and lever are gold fill. It has what appears to be its original Waterman No.2 nib in a fine, but smooth, point. This delightful vintage pen has some minor body wear but overall is in good condition with a crisp imprint which states “Waterman’s Fountain Pen, Reg. US Pat. Off. Made in USA”. It measures 11cm with cap on and 13.7cm with cap on barrel end. It is a true reflection of its period and this Lady will not only provide many years of writing pleasure but will be equally at home in a vintage fountain pen collection.
