Silver banded fountain pen (detail)

Each fountain pen or piece of writing equipment forms part of the collective history of its period and has a history unique to that particular item. In the 1930’s a silver banded fountain pen (right) was purchased by estate workers, with no doubt hard earned wages, and inscribed to present as a silver wedding gift to the land owner. It was reported recently that, in the days before the National Health Service, when health care had to be paid for, a man pawned his fountain pen to raise funds to enable his wife to be released from hospital. A recently sold writing cabinet was originally a presentation piece to recognise 40 years of loyal service in a period when jobs were for “life”. Just three examples which only scratch the surface of the lifetime of memories held within each item. A treasure trove of history that no new fountain pen could convey.

Below, and on following pages, are all the pens in our Sold Archive, displayed in a random order. Waterman No.7

Waterman No.7

Fine nib, Lever fill system.
Condition: Very Good
Colour: Red Ripple
1927

Sold

This magnificent Waterman "Ripple" vintage pen was made in the USA around 1927. Waterman produced a series of these pens with differing nib types, the type was denoted by the band at the top of the cap and, of course, on the nib itself. This particular model has a “Purple” nib – which indicates a fine stiff point - marketed at the time as suitable for an accountant. The cap band colour is black and so it is likely the original nib did not suit the previous owner and an alternative Waterman series nib was inserted. The "Purple" was included in the initial range of 7 series colours from 1927 to 1928 but was then dropped from the UK range. Whilst this pen originated in the USA, this nib type is hard to find these days. The cap also sports a Waterman’s Ideal ball ended clip and gold fill band. The barrel states “Waterman’s” “Made in USA” – with No. 7 marked on the end. The original lever has been replaced by a flag gold fill lever. There is some wear to cap and lever plating. The nib states “Waterman Ideal – Purple”. This is a super pen, a fine size (just over 5½ inches long with cap on) in good condition and suitable for everyday use and/or as a collector’s item. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request.

London Hallmark Silver Overlay

Medium to broad nib, Lever fill system.
Condition: Good
Colour: Silver overlay on hard rubber
1926

Sold

This elegant vintage fountain pen was made in England of hard rubber and overlayed in silver in 1926. It is a clipless model and typical of the fine metal overlays of the period. Made at a time when plastic with its bright marble colours was not yet available, gold and silver overlays were used to provide a more “quality” item for the discerning customer. This particular vintage fountain pen has an attractive lined design, a clear lozenge, a strong hallmark, and very little age wear. The cap, when unscrewed from the body to reveal the nib, screws onto the bottom of the barrel to ensure it is not lost- it also provides a better balanced pen when writing. The nib is a warranted 1st quality 14ct gold with a medium to broad point. It measures 14.3cm with cap on and 17.9cm with cap screwed on barrel end – so as you can see it is a long and elegant English silver overlay vintage pen which will be a pleasure to own. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request.

Conway Stewart No. 286

Medium to Broad nib, Lever fill system.
Condition: Poor
Colour: Rose Marble
c1940

Sold

This classic Conway Stewart vintage fountain pen of the early 1940’s in rose marble has obviously been well used in its lifetime. It has nibble marks at the end of the barrel, and cap top, some barrel scratches and general overall wear due to heavy use – so I would say it is in poor condition. However, it is working and it does have a rather pleasing Conway 14ct medium to broad nib – which is worth the price in itself. There is some plating wear to the cap clip, single cap band and lever - it’s a bit of a casualty of use but it is still a serviceable pen and a good everyday writer. The text on the barrel reads “The Conway Stewart No.286” I wouldn’t blame you if you rejected it but someone needs to give it a home and at this price it’s got to be a good buy. It is a good looking pen finish and doesn’t deserve to end up in the spares box.  It measures 13cm with cap on and 16.2cm with cap on barrel end. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request.

Parker 51 Trio

Parker 51 Trio

Medium nib, Aerometric fill system.
Condition: Very Good
Colour: Jet Black
c1957

Sold

A Parker Trio of “51” fountain pen, “51” rotary pencil and “51” Ballpoint all in working order is a treat to see. The “51” aerometric filling fountain pen was introduced by Parker in 1948. Its aerodynamic design made it a classic and the plaudits it received over the years both in terms of design and reliability are well deserved. Towards the end of the 50’s Parker extended the “51”range to include Trio sets of which this is an example. They were understandably popular at the time. This particular trio has a classic jet black body with, what Parker termed, a “lustraloy” cap which is really brushed steel. All three items are in good condition with only minor age wear, mainly to the rotary pencil with the cap end jewel being slightly darker than the others. The Parker 51 nib is a medium smooth writer and the “51” ballpoint takes modern Parker refills – it has a new one fitted. The "51" rotary pencil contains lead and can take modern day replacement leads however, it does come complete with an original phial of replacement Parker leads. The fountain pen measures 13.8cm with cap on and 15cm with cap on barrel end. The rotary pencil measures 13.5cm and the ballpoint 13cm. An excellent set to either add to a collection, present as a gift or for personal use everyday. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request.

Fine to Medium nib, Button fill system.
Condition: Good
Colour: Gold and Black Marble
c1946

Sold

This stylish Parker Duofold vintage fountain pen was made in England at Parker’s Newhaven plant. On its launch in 1946 Parker called it the “New Style Duofold”. Easily recognisable with its slightly chunky styling, ornate cap lip band and blind cap metal tassle, it was available in two solid and three marble colours. This particular example is in a very attractive gold and black marble finish. The barrel imprint states “Geo S.Parker – Parker Duofold Reg. T.M.”. The Parker 14ct fine to medium point nib states “Parker Duofold Pen 14k N” – the “N” referring to the Newhaven plant. It is a good size, slightly chunky, vintage button filling fountain pen measuring 13.1cm with cap on and 15.2cm with cap on barrel end. Condition is good with only minor age wear, primarily on the cap trim. This restored New Style Duofold will now provide many more years of everyday writing service. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. unless otherwise stated and are bench tested prior to offering for sale. Parker Gold Fill Overlay

Parker Gold Fill Overlay

Medium to Broad nib, Button fill system.
Condition: Fair-Good
Colour: Gold Fill Overlay
c1925

Sold

This small delightful vintage fountain pen was manufactured by The Parker Pen Company in the 1920’s. It is a button filling pen of sleek design with gold fill trim and the trademark Parker ball ended clip on the cap. Most likely made for the female market due to its size, it is nonetheless suitable for use by any person with a smaller hand. It is unusual to find a gold fill version of these smaller Parkers, particularly with a ball ended clip rather than a ring at the top of the cap. The clip carries the Parker branding and the cap has the words “Parker Fountain Pen Gold Filled Patented”. The Parker nib is a smooth writer and has a medium to broad point. It states “Parker Lucky Curve Pen B”. The cap fits most satisfactorily onto the bottom of the barrel whilst writing to enable a good balance. The barrel itself has a chased pattern of alternating panels of lines, clear and crossed chasing. This vintage pen is in fair to good condition. It has obviously been well loved and used in its time as there is a fair amount of brassing to the gold fill overlay, particularly around the rim of the cap and the top of the cap bushel – I have tried to show this in the photograph – but this is reflected in the price. It measures 11cm with cap on and 13.2cm with cap on barrel end. It remains a lovely example of its type and its era and will provide many more years of writing service. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request
