Our Sold Archive provides information to budding vintage fountain pen/writing equipment collectors and social history students.
Each fountain pen or piece of writing equipment forms part of the collective history of its period and has a history unique to that particular item. In the 1930’s a silver banded fountain pen (right) was purchased by estate workers, with no doubt hard earned wages, and inscribed to present as a silver wedding gift to the land owner. It was reported recently that, in the days before the National Health Service, when health care had to be paid for, a man pawned his fountain pen to raise funds to enable his wife to be released from hospital. A recently sold writing cabinet was originally a presentation piece to recognise 40 years of loyal service in a period when jobs were for “life”. Just three examples which only scratch the surface of the lifetime of memories held within each item. A treasure trove of history that no new fountain pen could convey.

Sheaffer PFM III - Classic Black | Stock number: 5271 |
![]() Click for a larger version of this picture.
Fine to Medium nib, Snorkel fill system. |
Sold |
This fountain pen was manufactured by Sheaffer in the United States of America from 1959 to 1963. Regarded by some as “the best fountain pen ever” this Sheaffer is called the PFM (Pen For Men) due to its large size and (then) new bold styling. It was advertised as “the complete pen for today’s active man”. These days it is equally popular and appropriate for females who prefer a larger size fountain pen. This model, the PFM III, has a classic black cap and barrel with gold fill trim and the (at the time) newly designed Sheaffer 14ct gold inlaid nib. This particular example has a fine to medium nib. The “clean” filling method is via a “snorkel” (named after the tube-breathing submarines of the Second World War) which extends from the nib end of the pen combined with a piston fill. It is in good condition with some age wear, in particular a minor chip in the plastic on the underside of the nib shell – however this is reflected in the price. It measures 13.8cm with cap on and 14.4cm with cap on barrel end. An excellent vintage pen to either add to a collection or use as an everyday workhorse. It comes complete with a copy of the original filling instructions. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request.

Parker Canadian Duofold | Stock number: 1632 |

Fine to Medium nib, Button fill system. |
Sold |
This iconic Parker Senior Duofold fountain pen was made in their Canadian plant around 1929 and is a classic Jet Black with gold plated trim fountain pen of the period. It is a good size and quite a chubby vintage pen measuring 13.3 cm with cap on and 16.7cm with cap on barrel end. The cap sports the original gold plated Parker ball ended clip with the text “Pat.Sep. 5 16 Parker” and two cap bands. The barrel imprint is pretty strong and states “Geo S. Parker Duofold Fountain Pen, Canada” with the “Lucky Curve” banner. The “Lucky Curve” relates to the type of feed which was used by Parker until August 1928. From that date the Lucky Curve feed was replaced by a conventional feed but the barrel imprints continued to be used until stocks were exhausted* - hence this pen is likely to be around 1929 as it has a notched feed – sometimes called a Christmas tree feed. It has an excellent large Parker Duofold Pen Canada B nib with a fine to medium point. Condition is good with very minor plating wear but some age wear towards the end of the barrel. Like all button fillers it fills by unscrewing the blind cap at the bottom of the barrel and pressing in the metal button – then releasing – leaving the nib in the ink for 5-10 seconds to allow ink to enter the interior sac. This classic Parker vintage pen is a pleasing writer and an excellent purchase either for everyday use or to add to a vintage fountain pen collection. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. unless stated otherwise and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request.

Sheaffer Imperial | Stock number: 5302 |
![]() Click for a larger version of this picture.
Fine to medium nib, Touchdown fill system. |
Sold |
This vintage fountain pen was made by Sheaffer and forms part of their very popular Imperial range. Its inlaid 14kt nib design was very well received and the Touchdown system was perceived to be a clean method of filling the pen with ink. It fills on the downward stroke. This particular example is in good condition and unusual in that it still has the retailer “chalk” marks which state its model and its price at the time of £7.50. Given that decimalisation took place in the UK in 1971 it is likely that the pen was offered for sale slightly after this date. I have left the “chalk” marks on the barrel of the pen as they are interesting to a collector however, they can be easily removed by rubbing with a soft cloth should it be purchased by someone who wishes to use it as an everyday writer. The Sheaffer inlaid nib has a fine to medium point and has the words “Sheaffer 14k Made in U.S.A”.. The gold fill cap carries the Sheaffer Lifetime white dot and has the words “Sheaffer- Made in the U.S.A.” so U.K. pricing and American markings – not an unusual combination considering Sheaffer’s UK and American manufacturing plants. This stylish and particularly interesting example of the Imperial range measures 14 cm with cap on and 14.7cm with cap on barrel end. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request.

Fine - medium nib, Button fill system. |
Sold |
This Merlin No.33 vintage pen was made in Germany around 1950. It is a very serviceable economy line button filling pen. Being 12cm (4½ inches) long with the cap on it is a good size for the smaller hand. This particular example has a grey striated finish with a gold tone clip. Whilst it is a vintage pen it has not previously seen much use and therefore the fine-medium Merlin 14ct gold nib will smooth to suit your hand. It measures 11.8cm with cap on and 14cm with cap on barrel end. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. English Button Filler Pale and Dark Blue Marble | Stock number: 5199 |
![]() Click for a larger version of this picture.
Medium nib, Button fill system. |
Sold |
This English made button filling vintage fountain pen cannot be attributed to any particular manufacturer but is typical of the English fountain pens of the 1930’s. The colour is most striking – a mixture of dark and light blue marbling with a gold fill trim. The nib is a Parker 14ct gold nib with a medium point and reads “Parker 14ct England 25”. The pen is in the style of the Lapis model of the 1930’s Parker Duofold range - however this is not a Parker pen, as certainly it has no other markings to support this. It measures 13.2cm with cap on and 16.5cm with cap on barrel end. There is some wear to the ball ended clip but apart from this there is only very minor age wear to the body and cap - overall it is in good condition and an attractive everyday writer. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. Filling instructions will be sent with your order. A gift box is available free of charge on request.

Sheaffer PFM III - Green | Stock number: 5273 |

Medium nib, Snorkel fill system. |
Sold |
This fountain pen was manufactured by the Sheaffer plant in Australia between 1959 to 1963. This model, the PFM III, has a plastic barrel and cap. The cap has a wide gold fill band and clip with the Sheaffer white dot. The colour is a strong green which offsets the gold fill trim very nicely. The (at the time) newly designed Sheaffer 14ct gold inlaid nib states “Sheaffer’s 14kt Aust.” and has a medium point. The “clean” filling method is via a “snorkel” (named after the tube-breathing submarines of the Second World War) which extends from the nib end of the pen, combined with a piston fill. It is in good condition with minor age wear overall. It measures 13.5cm with cap on and 14.4cm with cap on barrel end. A classic vintage pen in good order to either add to a collection or use as an everyday workhorse. It comes complete with a copy of the original filling instructions. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. unless stated otherwise and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch.
