Silver banded fountain pen (detail)

Each fountain pen or piece of writing equipment forms part of the collective history of its period and has a history unique to that particular item. In the 1930’s a silver banded fountain pen (right) was purchased by estate workers, with no doubt hard earned wages, and inscribed to present as a silver wedding gift to the land owner. It was reported recently that, in the days before the National Health Service, when health care had to be paid for, a man pawned his fountain pen to raise funds to enable his wife to be released from hospital. A recently sold writing cabinet was originally a presentation piece to recognise 40 years of loyal service in a period when jobs were for “life”. Just three examples which only scratch the surface of the lifetime of memories held within each item. A treasure trove of history that no new fountain pen could convey.

Below, and on following pages, are all the pens in our Sold Archive, displayed in a random order. Medium nib, Lever fill system.
Condition: Good
Colour: Green Herringbone
c1956

Sold

This Conway Stewart No. 85L was made in England around 1956. The “L” indicates a longer than normal pen for their range measuring 13.5cm with cap on and 16.3cm with cap on barrel end. It has an unusual pattern which Conway termed “Herringbone” in a pleasing green and black combination. As you would expect it has the original rolled gold Conway clip to the cap with one wide cap band. The body has the original Conway lever and the inscription “Conway Stewart 85L Made in England”. The nib is a Conway 14ct No.3 medium point and a slightly wet writer. Condition of this vintage pen is good with very minor age wear. It is an elegant, slim and longer than usual Conway with a very attractive finish which will be a good everyday writer or an addition to a vintage fountain pen collection. This vintage pen was not serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. but has passed our quality tests and will be further bench tested before despatch. Filling instructions will be sent with your order and a gift box is available free of charge on request.

Parker Victory Mk I Bandless

Medium nib, Button fill system.
Condition: Good
Colour: Light and Dark Burgundy Pearl
c1941

Sold

This English vintage fountain pen was made around 1941 by the Parker Pen factory, most likely at the old Valentine pen works at Newhaven. Parker, having taken over the Valentine Pen Co. to ensure UK Parker production, had by this stage begun to phase out Valentine pens and by 1945 manufacturing had concentrated on Parker pen production. This particular model is the Victory MKI and it was produced in colours similar to Parker’s successful Duofold range – in this instance the finish is termed light and dark burgundy pearl marble. As you will see the rolled gold Parker ball ended clip was still in use at this time. This particular MKI is the bandless model and therefore has no cap band. The barrel imprint reads “Made in Parker Victory Reg T.M.S”. The absence of a country of origin under “Made in” is not unusual. It has a Parker nib with a medium point which is a fairly smooth wet writer. It measures 13cm with cap on and 15.8cm with cap on barrel end. Condition is good with only minor age wear. This is a classic vintage Parker, in a pleasing and popular finish, which will serve well as an everyday writer or to add to a vintage fountain pen collection as an example of its type. All vintage pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. unless otherwise stated and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request and filling instructions will be sent with your order.

nib, fill system.
Condition: Fair-Good
c1926

Sold

This Jade Green Duofold pencil was made by Parker in 1926. They were produced with a black ring at the top and bottom of the pencil to match the Duofold pens available at the time. They were produced in Black, Red and Jade. This is a particularly good example of the Jade version. The colour is slightly lighter and brighter than the photograph. There is a little wear to the gold fill and minor marks on the tip so I have listed as fair to good condition. It has been recently professionally serviced. It is over 13cm long and can be refilled with 1.2mm diameter Yard O’Led replacement leads available from most good stationers. A great pencil, in good condition which will provide years of active service and/or be a fine addition to a Parker Duofold collection.

Fine-Medium nib, Lever fill system.
Condition: Good
Colour: Gold filled Overlay
c1925

Sold

This vintage pen was made in the USA by Waterman around 1925. It has a gold fill overlay on a hard rubber base. The overlay design pattern is called “Pansy” or "Etched"- you will see why from the photographs. This model differs slightly from the more common "Pansy Panel" design and as such is a rare pen.  Instead of a pocket clip it has a ring top – this was to enable it to be hung by a chain or ribbon around the neck of a lady, or from the watch chain of a gentleman. The model number, which is on the bottom of the barrel,  is explained by 0 = gold filled, 5 = lever fill,  52½ = slender size and v = short length. It measures 9.1cm with cap on and 12.1cm with cap on end (discounting ring top). It has a Waterman fine-medium nib which states: “Waterman’s Ideal” “New York 2”. The condition is good however there is some brassing to the gold fill. A rare pattern on this exceedingly pretty pen, ideal to add to a collection or to use as a working vintage pen. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request and filling instructions will be sent with your order.

Condition: Good
Colour: Gold filigree overlay
c1930

This delightful Waterman filigree overlay vintage pen was made in America around 1930. In common with the fashion at the time it has a ring on the top of the cap rather than a clip. It was designed to have a ribbon or chain through the cap ring which enabled ladies to wear it around the neck or gentlemen to hang it from a watch chain. It has the Waterman branding on the lip of the cap, the Waterman "Ideal" lozenge on the lever and the appropriate model numbering on the bottom of the barrel. It is in good condition with only minor wear to the gold fill. It has a Waterman Ideal nib with a medium point. It is a small slim pen measuring 9cm with cap on and 12.2cm with cap on barrel end. A super vintage pen to either add to a collection or to use everyday. A slim ribbon is available free of charge in either black, white, emerald green or bright blue. Medium nib, Button fill system.
Condition: Good
Colour: Parker
c1928

Sold

This stylish and classic Parker vintage pen was made in America around 1928 specifically for the female customer. The Duofold range was extremely popular and this, the “Lady Duofold” was similar to the Junior model but with a ring top rather than a clip. It is in a colour they termed Chinese Red. It has a broad 12ct gold plated cap band and a Chatelaine ring. It was designed to be hung around the neck by a ribbon or chain and, of course, the same could be done today. It is a small, slim pen measuring 11.6cm with cap on and 14.5cm with cap on barrel end. The barrel imprint reads “Geo S. Parker Fountain Pen – Lady Duofold – Janesville – Lucky Curve – WIS - USA PAT 4-25-11”. The smooth medium point Parker nib reads “Parker Duofold Pen – Made in USA”. Its condition is good with only minor age wear and minimal brassing to the12ct gold plated cap band. The cap ring has been replaced at some point in its life but done well. This vintage pen is a button filler which means that you unscrew a blind cap at the end of the barrel to reveal a button which you press to expel the air in the sac and depress to allow the ink to enter – a clean and efficient filling method. It is an excellent fountain pen, a vintage classic with style and character which will be a pleasure to use everyday or to add to a collection.

Fine to medium nib, Aerometric fill system.
Condition: Good
Colour: Cocoa
c1948

Sold

This rare Parker 51 "Demi" fountain pen and pencil set was made in the U.S.A. around 1948 and is in an unusual and rare finish called "cocoa". The "demi" size is slightly smaller than the usual Parker 51 and whilst it was originally made for the ladies market, it proved to be equally popular with gentlemen of the time. The cap is the lustraloy thin lipped band design. The nib is more fine than medium. The set is in good condition and comes with its original box. The box does show some signs of wear but overall is in good order. The interior of the box was designed to compliment the colour of the pen and pencil. The pen measures 12.8cm with cap on and 14cm with cap on barrel end. The pencil measures 12cm. It is an excellent set and of course is in full working order. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. Burnham

Burnham

Click for a larger version of this picture.

Medium nib, Lever fill system.
Condition: Fair-Good
Colour: Wine and grey mottle
c1948

Sold

This small Burnham vintage pen measures 11.6cm with cap on and 14.3cm with cap on end of barrel. It was made around 1948 by the English pen manufacturer – The Wyvern Pen Co. and marketed under the Burnham brand name. They are distinctive by their various coloured mottle finish – in this instance wine and grey mottle. They were more of an economy pen – the nib and trim on this particular model is a gold tone rather than rolled gold. Hence, as with the clip on this pen, over the years this rubs away, leaving a not unpleasant metal finish. This particular example has little body wear and so retains its colour well. It has a medium point nib and will provide good service as a daily writer for many years yet. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request.
