This classic vintage set of lever filling fountain pen and expel/repel pencil was made by Waterman in the mid 1940’s. Whilst it is a fairly standard Waterman’s black set, it stands out due to the broad hallmarked 9ct gold band around both pen and pencil. There is the usual age wear but nothing of note apart from perhaps more brassing to the clip than one would prefer. The text on the pen barrel reads simply “Waterman’s – Made in England” The imprint on the pencil has faded over time but of course it has the Waterman branding from the clip and the gold band with usual F.D.W. (Frank D Waterman) with the hallmark. The fountain pen nib has a fine point and reads “Waterman’s 14ct NW5”. The pencil has lead in the chamber and is in working order. It is filled from the point end, which is what you turn to expel or repel the lead. The pen is a good size measuring 130mm with cap on and 160mm with cap on barrel end. The pencil measures 125mm. This is a good classic everyday 1940’s vintage set from an excellent manufacturer. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. unless stated otherwise and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. Filling instructions will be sent with your order and a gift box is available free of charge on request at checkout.

This vintage fountain pen- the Taperite Stateleigh- was made by Waterman around 1945. It is not a particularly rare model but this example offers something extra. It forms part of a recently purchased collection and was previously owned by the late Henry Pleasants (1910-2000). He was an American music critic for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin. He subsequently joined the U.S. Army -leaving to enter the Foreign Service in 1950. He  served as an intelligence officer in Munich, was involved with espionage during the Cold War and was CIA station chief in Bonn. He retired from the foreign service in 1964 and settled in London with his wife, Virginia Pleasants, the harpsichordist and pianist. His love of music and, in particular, the human voice, led him to write “The Great Singers” , released in 1966, which I gather became a standard reference work. For thirty years he was the London music critic for the International Herald Tribune. Given that his vintage fountain pen dates from 1945 it is most likely that it was in use during his work as an intelligence officer and thereafter until his death in 2000 when it was passed on to a friend and collector and then to me - if only it could speak. Condition is good but with some age wear particularly on the clip of the gold fill cap that also has some minor dings - these are reflected in the price – as is its provenance. The slip on cap carries the Stateleigh “star and stripes” motif and is engraved “H.P.” on the reverse. The smooth nib has a fine to medium point – and is a pleasure to use. It measures 133mm with cap on and 156mm with cap on barrel end. The barrel text reads “Waterman’s Made in U.S.A.”. So a piece of fountain pen history which will sit very well in a vintage fountain pen collection but will equally serve as a “special” everyday writer. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. unless stated otherwise and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. Filling instructions will be sent with your order and a gift box is available free of charge on request.

This Waterman lever filling fountain pen was made in England, probably at the Falcon Pen Works in Neasden, around 1946 shortly after Waterman commenced manufacture there in the U.K. It has an attractive light and dark green pearl striated design finish and gold fill trim. The green is slightly “greener” than is evident in the photograph which looks more grey/green. The barrel imprint reads “Waterman’s Made in England W3”. The nib text reads “Waterman 14ct.W3” and has a fine to medium point. The cap has one thick gold fill decorative band and the original Waterman clip. The pen overall is in fair to good condition. The “fair” relates primarily to the trim which has some brassing and surface age wear to the nib as can be seen in the photograph. It is priced accordingly. The cap and body have superficial age wear only. It is a pleasing size, slightly smaller than the W5 measuring 12.4cm with cap on and 15.1cm with cap on barrel end. A good vintage pen for everyday writing. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. unless stated otherwise and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request and filling instructions will be sent with your order.

This Waterman “W5” model vintage fountain pen and pencil set were made in England, probably at the Falcon Pen Works in Neasden, around 1946 shortly after Waterman commenced manufacture there in the U.K. They have a very attractive pale and dark green pearl striated finish with gold fill trim. You will note that both have one broad and two thin gold fill bands which contrast well with the green pearl. Their caps carry the Waterman branding. The fountain pen barrel imprint reads “Waterman’s Made in England W5”. The pencil imprint reads “Waterman’s Made in England”. The fountain pen is a lever filler (with the Waterman spade end lever) and has a Waterman fine firm nib with the text “Waterman’s 14ct W5” – there are four small impressed squares underneath this which I cannot read. The pencil is in working order and operates on an expel/repel system (you turn the cap one way to extend the lead and the other way to hide it. The fountain pen measures 12.8cm with cap on and 15.5cm with cap on barrel end, the pencil 12.5cm. Both are in very good condition with only very minor age wear – it seems they have been kept in their box for a number of years. The box, with it s Waterman branding on top of and inside the lid, has some foxing on the interior, externally there are only minor age marks. A good quality, attractive vintage fountain pen set for everyday writing or to add to a vintage fountain collection. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. unless otherwise stated and are bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. Filling instructions will be sent with your order.
