This early vintage fountain pen and pencil were made by Waterman in the USA around 1925. In common with other pens and pencils of the era they are made of hard rubber. As can be seen in the illustration both the fountain pen and pencil are decorated with a 9ct gold band, containing the “FDW” initials which stands for Frank D. Waterman - thereby signifying the Waterman brand. Each also has the Waterman gold fill clip on the cap which sports the “Ideal” logo. In the case of the fountain pen this band has an additional inscription which reads “With Sincere Gratitude. Mr. & Mrs. Shaw and Baby”. The previous owner was a policeman whom I gather was often called upon to make an emergency delivery whilst on duty. The pen must have been well received as whilst it is in good condition, it has obviously been used over the intervening years. You will note a ring indentation around the bottom of the cap. This does not mean that a cap band is missing – simply the way it was designed as confirmed by advertisements of the period. The gold fill lever has the Waterman Ideal lozenge. The bottom of the barrel has the imprint of the model number “52” – a very popular range at the time. At the end of the barrel is the text “Waterman’s Reg. US. Pat. Off. Made in USA”. The nib is a “Waterman’s Ideal” with a medium point and has some of the usual pleasing Waterman flex. There is some colour variation where the cap has covered the barrel and generally where the hard rubber has changed colour over the years - this is common in hard rubber pens of the period. The fountain pen comes with the pencil and the original presentation box. The pencil appears not to have been out of the box as the chased hard rubber finish has retained its original colour. The top of the pencil unscrews and the chamber has lead in it. I am not a pencil expert but it is in working order and I believe Yard O’Led replacement leads could be used as replacement. It carries the Waterman branding and, of course, the 9ct gold band and “Ideal” clip. The presentation box is in good condition. The blue velvet exterior is clean as is the internal tray, which is more purple than blue. The interior silk lid lining has some marking at the edges but the Waterman logo is crisp. The fountain pen measures 13.7cm with cap on and 17.2cm with cap on barrel end. The pencil measures 13.3cm.  This unique piece of writing history, from an excellent manufacturer, is suitable to use everyday or to add to a vintage fountain pen collection. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. unless otherwise stated and are bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. Filling instructions will be sent with your order.

This elegant and stylish early gold fill overlay vintage fountain pen was made by Waterman in the early 1920’s. The cap and body have an unusual chain link design gold fill overlay on a hard rubber base. Hard rubber was the most common material used in fountain pen production at the time, the more expensive and desirable models, such as this, had either gold fill bands or decorated gold fill overlays.  The cap has a screw fit and the pen is a lever filler. It has the Waterman “Ideal” logo on the lever bar, the Waterman name is around the thin plain band at the top of the barrel and the Waterman model number of 521/2 is on the barrel bottom. Around the edge of the barrel end are the words “WATERMAN’S, REG U.S. PAT. OFF” it goes on to say “Made in….”  but this has worn over the years. Given the previous text and research I would expect it to say U.S.A. The nib is a Waterman “Ideal” with a fine to medium point. It is a clipless model which adds to the symmetry of the design. It measures 13.5cm with cap on and 16.5cm with cap on barrel end and is in very good condition. Although not its original box it does come complete with a Waterman “Ideal” box of the period with satin inner lid lining stating “Waterman’s Ideal Fountain Pen – Makes its Mark All Around the World” with the Waterman "Globe" in the centre and blue velvet base inner lining and outer cover.  The box is 15.5cm long. A quality vintage fountain pen from an excellent manufacturer in very good condition, to either add to a collection or to use everyday. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. Filling instructions will be sent with your order.

This early silver overlay lever filling vintage pen was made by Waterman in the U.S.A., around 1925. It has French jeweller’s silver markings on cap and barrel and is an example of a slim, clipless model with a screw on cap. This particular pen has the “Gothic” pattern overlay, a Waterman decoration which was very popular at the time. It has its original “Waterman’s Ideal” lozenge filling lever and Waterman’s Ideal medium to slightly broad flexible nib. It is in excellent condition with minor age markings to cap top. The lower end of the barrel reads “Waterman’s Reg. US Pat Made in U.S.A.” and the bottom of the barrel has the Waterman model number of “52½”. It measures 13.5cm with cap on and 16.4cm with cap on end of barrel. It is an elegant and exceptionally fine vintage pen suitable for everyday use and/or as a working collector’s item. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. This Waterman vintage pen was made in the USA between 1923 and 1930. Waterman produced a series of duo coloured pens at the time, some of which were in what they termed a “Woodgrain” finish which imitated the grain of wood and others, such as this one, had a wavy pattern which was advertised in 1928 as a two tone “Ripple” finish. They were produced in olive, rose, red and this, the blue/green ripple version. The Blue/Green Ripple is quite a rare finish to find today and this is a good example of Waterman design and colour palette between the earlier plain hard rubber pens and the highly coloured plastic pens which followed it. The model number “52v” is clearly marked on the bottom of the barrel. It is a fairly short model measuring 11cm with cap on and 13.8cm with cap on barrel end, but a slightly chunky and pleasing size in the hand. The cap sports a Waterman’s Ideal ball ended clip with their trademark “Ideal” logo and is marked “Waterman’s Pat. Oct. 909”. The cap lip has a fairly broad Waterman gold fill band. The barrel states “Waterman’s Ideal Fountain Pen Canada Feb 9 1909” and has the Waterman Ideal trademark. In addition the barrel states “Patented Aug 9, 1906.” It has its original Waterman’s lever with their “Ideal” lozenge. The Waterman nib has the text “Waterman’s Ideal Canada 2” and has a fine point with some flex. Condition is good but with some brassing to the cap band, and lever which I have illustrated. The colour is also good with only minor age wear. A rare and attractive vintage fountain pen from an excellent manufacturer. Suitable for everyday use and also to add to a vintage fountain pen collection. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. unless stated otherwise and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request and filling instructions will be sent with your order.
