This rare and substantial vintage fountain pen was manufactured by Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd. under the “Swan” brand name between 1924 and 1929. It forms part of the “Eternal” range introduced by MT&Co. to compete with Sheaffer’s “white dot” guarantee. The barrel and cap are made of hard rubber and it has the "Eternal" line addition of a gold fill ribbed broad cap lip band and slightly thinner ribbed band on the top of the cap. The “Swan” logo is also imprinted onto the very top of the cap. The gold fill ball clip on the cap states “Patent Jan 19 1915”. As you will see from the montage, the barrel imprint states “Swan self –filling pen Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd Made in England with the “Swan” trademark” The model number around the bottom of the barrel is “Eternal 46”. The large Eternal nib has a fine to medium point with the text “Swan Eternal 6 14ct. Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd Made in England”. It is a large vintage fountain pen measuring 14.5 cm with cap on and 18.2cm with cap on barrel end. Condition is good, as with most hard rubber pens their colour changes over the years to this muted brown which is rather attractive. There is a small old ink stain on the top of the cap. An excellent, rare and large vintage pen which will grace any collection and is also suitable for everyday use.
