This rare sterling silver Swan vintage pen was made by Mabie Todd Ltd. under the Swan brand in the late 1930’s. The hallmark is London 1938. It is a lovely pen in a finish that was termed a “Barleycorn” design. It is in good condition overall but has seen some changes during its lifetime. The clip has been replaced with a Swan accommodation clip (this means that the clip will accommodate most pen caps) and the nib has been replaced with an English “Summit” nib which has a smooth medium-broad point. These changes are reflected in the price. It is a “leverless short” pen which means that it fills by twisting the knob at the bottom of the pen barrel and that it is slightly shorter than the average pen, measuring 11.1cm with cap on and 13.1cm with cap on barrel end. It is a rare fountain pen, in good condition with only minor age wear, which will provide pleasure in a collection and long service if pressed into everyday use. | |
