This unusual vintage fountain pen was made in England by Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd. under the “Swan” brand name around 1938. It is unusual in that whilst it is a plastic body its finish is in a pattern called “silver grey snakeskin”. There were a series of snakeskin finishes -  blue, green, ruby and silver grey and they are not that easy to find these days in good, and working, order. The design is enhanced by having a chrome lever and trim for the“Swan” clip. The barrel imprint states “Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd., Swan Self Filler – Made in England” – with the “Swan” emblem. The top of the cap also carries the “Swan” emblem. The nib is a Swan No.1” - 14ct. with a medium to slightly broad nib with some flex. A medium sized pen it measures 155mm with cap on barrel end and 125mm with cap. Condition is good with minimal age wear. An unusual and quite rare vintage fountain pen from an excellent manufacturer. It is suitable to either add to a collection or, with its smooth medium to slightly broad nib, to use as an everyday writer. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. unless stated otherwise and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. Filling instructions will be sent with your order. A gift box is available free of charge on request at checkout.

This Swan vintage fountain pen was made in England in 1935 by Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd. – a pen company which originated in America in 1843, opening its UK subsidiary in 1884 in Cheapside in London. At one point Swan pens were advertised as “the pen of the British Empire” as the English subsidiary bought the rights to the European and colonial business in 1915. This particular model, in black with chrome trim, is called the “Blackbird” and is recognised by the Blackbird image at the top of the ball ended clip. The “Blackbird” was an economy range and used for school, general office and everyday writing. You will see from the montage that the cap and barrel have ribbed chasing with a broad smooth area at the bottom of the cap and a smooth lozenge on the barrel. These could have been used for personalization but they are both clear. The text on the crisp barrel imprint reads “Blackbird self filler – Mabie Todd & Co. Ltd. – Made in England” with the trademark flying blackbird to the left. The base of the barrel has the model number “BB2/60”. The smooth nib has a medium point and states “Blackbird 14ct. MT&Co.LD Made in England” and the nib section has “Blackbird” branding. Condition is good with some loss of chrome plating to the clip and a little more to the lever – which is why I have highlighted it in the montage. However it is priced accordingly and it will provide many more years of writing service. It measures 122mm with cap on and 152mm with cap on barrel end. An economy fountain pen from a legendary manufacturer that doesn’t pretend to be anything other than what it is – a good everyday writer. All fountain pens are professionally serviced by Vintage Fountain Pens Inc. and bench tested prior to offering for sale. A further inspection is carried out before despatch. A gift box is available free of charge on request at checkout and filling instructions will be sent with your order.
